Noordeloos Timeline (Taken from Consistory Minutes)

1857:  The Noordeloos Church, located about 4 miles northwest of Zeeland, was organized in 1857.  The name Noordeloos was adopted from Noordeloos in South Holland, the Netherlands.  The Rev. Koene VanDen Bosch was the first Pastor to serve Noordeloos Church

August, 1863:  Asked to be admitted to the church, Vande Luyster, P. Heyboer and wife, F. Heyboer and wife, Gysbert Vogel, Marie Vogel, Steven Otterloo, and Brother Diepenhorst, Bishop.  Confession to be made the first time the Dominee preaches in Zeeland.

July, 1874:  The promise to the minister: $200 in money, $100 in produce, free house, free food and a garden.  Accepted by the congregation.

September, 1874:  Decided to build a church, the length thereof 45 feet and the width 35 feet.  Discussion as to place.  G. Rosbach promises 1/4 acre for the church and a strip of land for horse stables.  The price is not determined.  Also to investigate an acre of land on the Koffer’s farm (later the farm of G. Vander Veer).

August, 1875:  A church member, Jacob Riemersma, comes to consistory to establish a Sunday school, and to explain the lessons.

October, 1875:  All members are asked to donate 1/2 cord of wood for the stove.  P. Heyboer is janitor for $0.25 a week.  He is also to keep record of those who donate the wood.  Decided to build a house by the church.  Building committee to have a blueprint and the costs at the Thanksgiving Day meeting.  Also a picket fence around it.

November 14, 1881:  By all votes decided to change the name to Holland Christian Reformed Church and to organize.

August 16, 1883:  Discussion to change the place of the church to the land of widow Veldheer, northwest corner.  The vote on this is 36 in favor, and 4 against.  The committee: Elleman, DeJonge and H. Diepenhorst.

February, 1884:  Consistory asks Classis if elders are permitted on pulpit.  They answer yes.  Congregation not satisfied.  Carried to Synod in Grand Rapids.  They answer “leave it up to each consistory.”  The decision of the Noordeloos Consistory is that it is a place for ministers only.

August 31, 1885:  Decide not to have dead people in church at funeral time.

July, 1886:  Noordeloos Church decide to call a minister of their own at $400 salary, $350 in money, and 20 cords of wood.  The trio is student Heurink, student Marcuspen, and Dominee R.T. Kuiper from Graafschap.  Counselor at the this meeting is Rietdyk from Muskegon.  Result of the voting: Heurink is chosen.  Heurink declines.

1888:  Land behind the horse stables is rented for $3.00.  Decided to put stoves in the middle of church.

January, 1891:  Janitors salary is $13.50 a year.  Decided to sell part of horse stables.  Auctioneer F. Heyboer, credit on notes until September 1 with good signer.  Result of auction: middle stables to J. Jonkreig $11.25, back end of stables to G. Rosbach for $8.50, the lean to F. Heyboer for $1.50.

1900:  Dominee Kreulen leave because of weakness (asked to be relieved). Congregational meeting held on Sunday afternoon after the service to acquaint Molhoek with his duties for the congregation.

January, 1901:  Catechism to begin Saturday, November 9, for the little ones.  Because of the work on the farm.  The larger ones two weeks later.

1920:  Decided that the deacons sit behind the elders on the right side of the pulpit.  Decided to have an evening service once per month on the full moon, in the language of the land.  The budget system is accepted.

1920:  Decided to call a minister to preach half in Dutch and half in English

1922:  Congregational meeting.  The consistory presents to the congregation the following: to put on the credentials, disband the congregation at a time set by Classis.  A committee of Classis meets with the consistory as to the further state of Noordeloos, but leave without suggestions or advice.  Delegates of the consistory go to Classis to ask for $500 subsidy.

October, 1922:  English services every other Sunday in the afternoon.  Collection bags are done away with and baskets now being used.

November, 1926:  The Consistory decides to change the lights in the church from kerosene to hollow wire system.

January 4, 1934:  Number of families reported in yearbook was 17.

July 11, 1950:  Congregation votes in favor of having evening services in place of afternoon services for the summer months.

1957:  Celebrated 100th Anniversary.

May 3, 1966:  Motion carried that the church treasurer pays one half of the parsonage telephone bill.  The reason for this is that many calls are in regard to church affairs.

November 28, 1966:  It is decided to purchase some stink bombs to be used in the bathrooms.  Building committee asked to find the cause of the odor.

March 27, 1967:  Rev. Masselink reports that he is very happy with our church attendance, but that it is becoming very crowded.

May 10, 1967:  Rev. Masselink requests that we install a telephone in church.  He will investigate the cost of this installation.

May 31, 1967:  Notice is received that the pictures of our ministers are now ready to be placed in the consistory room.

November 1, 1967:  Women suffrage is again discussed at length.  A motion is made and supported that we uphold the decisions made earlier by the elders, allowing women to vote at congregational meetings.  It is decided that the congregation be notified in simple terms with as few words as possible.  (Later this was overturned).

November 20, 1967:  Since women are now permitted to vote at congregational meetings, Rev. Masselink asks to make a few minor changes in the rules for congregational meetings.

January 27, 1969:  It was discussed the possibility of putting screens in front of the registers to control mice.  Investigate control and cost.

March 31, 1969:  A questionnaire prepared by the Future Expansion Committee is submitted.

1. Do we need a new church?

2. Where should we build?  Present property or new location?

3. Should we build a church for approximately 100 families or larger?

4. The consistory decided to have 1/3 in the bank before we can start building.

5. How much can you give to the Expansion Fund per week?

6. Would you as a family be willing to set aside $1,000.00 over the next three years for a new church?

March 26, 1973:  The congregation approved a new church building at a cost of $178,500

April 18, 1974:  Dedication of new church to be held April 18.

April 18, 1975:  Motion was made and supported to permit the dismantling of the old church building.

1979:  Congregation consisted of 65 families and 230 members.

June 25, 1979:  The congregation approved a new parsonage.

April 1982:  Observed the 125th Anniversary.

March 21, 1983:  It is moved and supported that women shall have the right to vote in the Noordeloos CRC; after much intensive discussion the motion is defeated.

May 18, 1987:  Article 8.  Motion made and supported to amend the original motion on women voting to read as follows:  “All congregation members in good and regular standing to be eligible to vote.”

October 11, 1989:  We burned the mortgages of the church and parsonage.

November 20, 1989:  Morie Lokers is welcomed to our meeting to update us on the Historical Sign.  A motion is made to go ahead and order the sign.

October 14, 1990:  Dedicated the Historical Sign.

October 31, 2004:  Dedicated the new 9,000 square feet of educational building.

2007:  Celebrated our 150th Anniversary.
